Document in a folder

A folder can hold two different kinds of document. They look similar in the folder listing, but they behave differently when you open them and offer different actions. This page explains both kinds, how to view them, and the actions available on each.

The two kinds of document

Constellab document

A Constellab document is a native rich-text document that is created and edited directly in the Space. It uses the same rich-text technology as a lab note, so in short it is "a note managed by the Space". It is the only document type you author inside the Space, and it keeps a full version History.

Uploaded document

An uploaded document is a file you upload into a folder (a PDF, an office file, an image, etc.). It is stored and consulted in the Space but is not authored there, so it has no version history. You can preview it, download it, and rename it.

Viewing a document

Viewing a Constellab document

Opening a Constellab document shows its title, its tags, and its creation and last-modification information above the rich-text content. If you have edit rights you can switch between View and Edit mode with a single button, rename the document by editing its title inline, and print it. Changes are saved automatically as you type.

Previewing an uploaded document

Opening an uploaded document shows a preview: images are displayed inline, and office or PDF files are rendered in an embedded viewer. The title and tags are shown above the preview, and the title can be renamed inline if you have edit rights.

The action menu

Each document has an action menu (the more button). The menu adapts to the document kind: some entries are specific to Constellab documents, some to uploaded documents, and a set of common actions is shown to users with edit rights.

The common actions below the fork require edit rights on the document:

  • Manage tags — add or remove tags on the document.
    • Rename document — change the document name.
      • Move to folder — move the document to another folder.
        • Tokens / share — manage share tokens for the document.
          • Move to trash — send the document to the trash.
