Overview

This section is where you manage the data labs attached to your space. A data lab is where data and pipelines actually live and run, while the space acts as the control plane that manages it. These pages let you see your labs, create new ones, and administrate each one.

What is a data lab?

A data lab is where data and pipelines are managed: it is where scenarios run, and where resources, applications, notes and forms are produced. It is a decentralised service that can run either on the cloud or on-premise.

Although the lab is the compute, it is managed by the space. The space governs a lab's access, configuration, version, start/stop and backups — the space is the control plane, the lab does the work. Labs can also communicate with each other.

Lab roles

Access to a lab is governed by two lab roles. Anyone with access to a lab — whether user or owner — can do anything inside the lab; there is no finer-grained permission on a lab's content. The roles differ only in lab-level administration:

  • Owner — everything a user can do, plus modify, configure, start/stop and grant access to the lab. A lab can have multiple owners and must have at least one owner at all times.
    • User — can log into the data lab and do anything inside it.

For the full role and access model across the space, folders and labs, see the Roles & access concepts.

      Pages in this section

The section is organised around your list of labs and, for each lab, a set of administration pages.

      My labs

The landing page lists the labs you have access to in the space. From here you open a lab to reach its dashboard and administration pages.

      Create a lab

Create a new data lab in the space. The creator becomes an owner and can then configure it and grant access to others.

      Lab pages

Once you open a lab, it exposes several pages:

      • Dashboard — the lab's home page, with an overview of the lab.
        • Config — the lab's configuration (owner-only administration).
          • Usage — resource consumption and KPIs for the lab.
            • Backups — the lab's backups.
              • Status history — the history of the lab's running state (start/stop and status changes over time).
                • Support — support for the lab.

                  The Datahub

A Datahub is a special type of data lab (same configuration and management as any other lab) that is always running, so it is always available.

Because it is always available, the Datahub is used to:

                  • store data long-term,
                    • host applications,
                      • act as an S3 server to store space documents.

Unlike a regular data lab, the Datahub does not run calculations or workflow execution itself — those are run by regular data labs, which the Datahub communicates with.
