Backups

Backups

A data lab runs on the cloud or on-premise, but it is managed by the Space. Part of that management is protecting the lab's content: the Space keeps backups of a lab so its data and database can be recovered later. The Backups page of a lab gathers everything related to this, so you can check the current backup status, browse the full backup history, and restore a backup to a lab.

Backup statuses

The top of the page shows the Backup statuses of the lab: one line summarising each backup configuration. For each one you can see:

  • Frequency — how often the backup runs (Daily or Weekly).
    • Backup location — the cloud provider region where the backup is stored.
      • Status — the current state of the backup.
        • Last backup — the date and time of the last successful backup, together with its size.

From this section you can also Delete all backups for the lab. Deleting removes every backup permanently and they cannot be recovered afterwards; backups cannot be deleted while the lab server still exists. Once deleted, storage billing for the backups stops.

          Backup history

The Backup history section lists every backup that has run for the lab, most recent first. Each entry shows when the backup started and how long it took, its status, the backup location, details for both the data and the database, and info about the backup's frequency and trigger mode (Automatic or Manual).

The history can be kept up to date with Synchronize, which refreshes the list from the lab. Lab owners have two extra actions here:

          • Backup data lab production — start a manual backup of the lab straight away. This can take a few minutes.
            • Stop current backups — stop any backups that are currently running.

              Restoring a backup

A backup can be restored to a data lab. From the backup statuses, open the actions menu on a line that has a successful backup and choose Restore backup to a data lab. Restoring copies the backed-up content into a chosen destination lab, so that lab is ready to use with the recovered state.

Before restoring, prepare the destination lab. The restore dialog asks you to follow these steps first:

              1. Configure the destination data lab with the same bricks.
                1. Make sure the lab manager of the destination data lab is running and configured.
                  1. Make sure the destination data lab is empty (no data).
                    1. Copy the users and folders from the source data lab to the destination data lab.

In the restore dialog you then pick the Destination data lab and choose what to restore:

                      • Restore database — restore the lab's database from the backup.
                        • Restore data — restore the lab's data from the backup.
                          • Force restore — replace existing data in the destination lab.

After confirming, the restore starts. It is not possible to restore if the destination lab already contains data (unless you force it), and the operation can take a few minutes. Once finished, the destination data lab is ready to use.
