Chat overview

Chat gives the people who share a folder a place to talk. It is a channel attached to a folder, where everyone with access to that folder can post and read messages in a single, ongoing conversation — much like a Slack channel.

Enabling chat on a folder

Chat is enabled per folder, and only at the root folder level. Sub-folders cannot have their own chat. Once a root folder has chat enabled, it becomes available to everyone who has access to that folder.

Who can access the chat

Anyone with access to the folder can read and post in its chat, regardless of their folder role — including folder visitors. There is no separate permission to grant: sharing the folder with someone is enough to let them take part in its conversation.

The Chat page

The Chat section lists the folders you can reach that have chat enabled. The layout has two parts:

  • Folder list — on the left, a tree of your chat-enabled folders. Folders without chat enabled appear for context but are not clickable; only chat-enabled folders open a conversation.
    • Conversation — on the right, the messages for the selected folder. When you open the page, the first available chat is selected automatically.

Each conversation is headed by the folder's icon and name, along with the list of people taking part, followed by the message thread where members read and send messages.

If none of the folders you can access has chat enabled, the Chat page is empty and invites you to enable chat on a folder first.
